Diva Challenge #172- DuoTangle, AuraKnot vs Mooka

The Diva has given us a very interesting Challenge this week. We are to only use two patterns, AuraKnot and Mooka. Both of these patterns are by Maria Thomas and Rick Roberts. Who are co-indecently hosting their CZT training siminar in Providence, RI. The Diva provided us with two videos by Maria and Rick instructing us how to draw AuraKnot and Mooka. How neat is that. I have not worked with either of these two patterns before, so the two videos were very appropriate and helpful. I seem to have given AuraKnot center stage on this one. Mooka is peeking around the edges. Both of these patterns are very nice, and can be tangleated so easily into a some wonderful Tangles. I was impressed with my first efforts when beginning to practice these patterns. Maria and Rick did such a wonderful job on the videos that learning these two great patterns was a snap. My practice sheets turned out amazing, surprisingly enough. That speaks well of Maria and Rick's ability to design and instruct how to draw their terrific patterns. (My practiced sheets were more interesting than my submission piece.)

  1. I love the way that you filled the inside with AuraKnot, and the way that you did the Mooka, with the fills around the outside. Plus, I always being a color girl like the hits of color. The red ribbon really sets everything off.

  2. Very nicely done, David. I like the red ribbon with the shimmer (I love shimmer on anything, even shading). Your center is perfect too.

  5. I totally hear on the practice sheets. I often think I do my best stuff in my notebooks. I think it's very hard not to be intimidated by "The Tile". However - your finished piece is wonderful. Masterful use of color and the patterns complement each other in a perfect, pleasing way. It is the red ribbon, however, that takes it all from "pleasing" to "lovely".

    1. Thanks so much, Jennifer. I enjoyed this challenge. All of my Diva Challenge responses so far have been drawn on the standard tile size. Not a lot of space. I'm still learning how to plan around this limitation. Simplification is my first hurddle. It is all great, and I'm lovin' it.

    2. I see - so it's the size you are getting used to. With me, I am just not as relaxed when I switch from my notebook to the more expensive tiles. I think: this counts! And this mindset gets in my way sometimes. But I can tell that you love it and of course so do I.

    3. It would be interesting to know what drawing sizes other tanglers are using on their Challenge submissions. I love looking at all the submissions, and I'm getting a suspicision that some of their original work is a bit bigger than the standard Tile size. They sure look good. Yes, we do love it.

  8. Beautiful! I really like the colored shading on your auraknot and the delicate mooka around the edges that makes it all look so intricate. The ribbon around the auraknot is a great touch!

    1. Since I drew this Challenge, I have bee practicing both the Mookas and the AuraKnots. Kind of backwards isn't it. I was up at 4:00 am this morning filling pages of my Sketchbook with Mookas. Tonigh it will be AuraKnots. It is true about the Mookas, they are so fun to draw. Once you start, you can't stop. So I won't. Thanks Anne.

  15. Wow! You put these together so well and added great color highlights. You are right about people working in different. sizes. Some use the tiles, others use their journals or sketchpads. Does not really make a difference but it is nice if people put the size in their post.

    1. Every once in a while, an artist will include the size of their canvas. I like that. I may try some sizes similar. All part of leaning ones limits, and hopefully expanding them. Thanks for your comments, Donald.

  16. Love the tile. The combination of discipline and control on the Mooka; the cheeky red ribbon and then the free and easy, not to say wild, Mooka. The more you look, the more you see. And then I looked at the practice pages on your other post. I could see hwere you were heading and how you were developing a Mooka "style" of your own but the page that is nearly all Mooka, with a little Phicops, a little Betweed and that oh so symbolic stone wall at the bottom. Now that said it all.

    1. I very much appreciate your comments. The practice page of Mookas was a pure pleasure to draw. One after another til I was out finished. All in one sitting. The PhiCops and the Tweed were already on the page from previously and were just ornaments for the marathon at hand. However the Stone Wall was drawn at the conclusion of the Mooka Marathon. Like a race horse cools down after a workout, my pen was overheated. I love stone walls. I love Nzeppel. I should have drawn a Wishing Well, threw in a coin, then jumped in to wrap things up. This is such great stuff.

  17. Oh lumme. My brain's gone. I meant the control etc on the Auraknot. Oh well, you get to a certain age and everything falls to pieces! Either way, Love the stuff you're producing.
